This study reports on the distribution of polychaete assemblages along a depth gradient from 5 to 25 m, along a stretch of rocky coast near Otranto (South Adriatic sea, Italy). Three depths were sampled in May and November 2000. At each depth three sites (about 100 m apart) were sampled by scraping off three replicate quadrats of 20×20 cm. The experimental design enabled identification of across- and along-shore spatial patterns of variation of polychaete assemblages. A total of 4,168 specimens…

Diversity and Distribution Patterns of Hard Bottom Polychaete Assemblages in the North Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean)

The knowledge on the hard bottom polychaete assemblages in the Northern Adriatic Sea, a Mediterranean region strongly affected by environmental pressures, is scarce and outdated. The objective of

Distribution patterns of shallow water polychaetes (Annelida) along the coast of Alexandria, Egypt (eastern Mediterranean)

TLDR
Polychaete distribution related to variation of grain size and sessile macrobenthos cover suggesting that these structural variables accounted more than the physical-chemical ones in influencing the patterns of assemblage distribution.

Ecology and diversity of Mediterranean hard-bottom Syllidae (Annelida): a community-level approach

TLDR
There was no consistent relationship between Syllidae distribution and habitat-forming algal species, and syllid abundance varied with that of other invertebrates, suggesting that future research should focus on the role of interspecific interactions in syllid ecology.

Mollusc assemblages of hard bottom subtidal fringe : a comparison between two coastal typologies

The mollusc assemblages of subtidal fringe from two different coastal typologies are described in their qualitative and quantitative features. The large-scale spatial investigation has been carried

Ecological patterns of polychaete assemblages associated with the Mediterranean stony coral Cladocora caespitosa (Linnaeus, 1767): a comparison of sites in two biogeographic zones (Adriatic and Aegean Sea)

The Mediterranean stony coral Cladocora caespitosa (Linnaeus, 1767) is a well-known habitat builder, and as such hosts a diversified faunal assemblage. Although polychaetes are one of the most

On the role of turf species as refuge in disturbed environments: A case study with polychaetes (Annelida: Polychaeta) in SW Mediterranean Sea

TLDR
It is pointed out that the assemblage inhabiting turf algae in the region studied is not substantially different to that found in pristine areas and that this type of phytal covering can act as effective refuge for polychaetes under moderately disturbed condition.

Spatial and temporal variability of sessile benthos in shallow Mediterranean marine caves

Hypotheses on the spatial and temporal distribution of sessile assemblages in sub- merged marine caves have rarely been tested. Classically, the distribution of cave benthos has been related mainly

The Role of Alien Polychaetes along the Alexandria Coast , Egypt

The alien polychaetes are widely distributed in the whole Mediterranean Sea as well as in the Egyptian waters. The objective of this study is to highlight the distribution and abundance of the alien

Diversity and Distribution of Sabellida (Annelida) under Protection Regimes

TLDR
Hard-bottom Sabellida are analyzed at 1.5 and 5 m depths at the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area (MPA) to describe diversity and distribution patterns, and to identify potential factors influencing their distribution.

Molluscs on subtidal cliffs: patterns of spatial distribution

The distribution of molluscan assemblages across and along a vertical rocky cliff near Otranto (southern Adriatic Sea, Italy) was studied. Sampling was undertaken in May and November 2000 at three

Patterns in subtidal marine assemblages associated with a deep-water sewage outfall

TLDR
There is correlative evidence of an effect of the outfall, but in general the assemblages showed various spatial and temporal fluctuations that should not be attributed to sewage.

Variability at different spatial scales of a coralligenous assemblage at Giannutri Island (Tuscan Archipelago, northwest Mediterranean)

This study was carried out on the rocky cliffs of Giannutri Island (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) to test the hypothesis that coralligenous assemblages are consistent within the bathymetric range considered

Spatial patterns of diverse macrofaunal assemblages in coralline turf and their associations with environmental variables

Mats of articulated coralline algal turf are common on many rocky intertidal shores. The dense fronds provide a habitat for extremely diverse and abundant macrofaunal assemblages. Despite a large

Understanding processes in complex assemblages depends on good understanding of spatial and temporal patterns of structure at various spatial scales. There has been little quantitative information

Spatial variability and human disturbance in shallow subtidal hard substrate assemblages: a regional approach

Quantitative information about spatial patterns in subtidal hard substrate assemblages is scant. Such information is necessary to understand the responses to anthropogenic disturbances in these

SPECIES DIVERSITY IN SUBTIDAL LANDSCAPES: MAINTENANCE BY PHYSICAL PROCESSES AND LARVAL RECRUITMENT

TLDR
In this study, subtidal landscapes of a New Zealand fjord were used to study the spatial patterns of epifaunal invertebrate species diversity and to test hypotheses about the mechanisms maintaining the patterns.

Comparison of patterns of spatial variation of microgastropods between two contrasting intertidal habitats

Small-scale spatial variation in the distribution of the macrofauna of marine intertidal shores has long been recognized, but there have been few quantitative studies about the scales of patchy
