A congenital flexion contracture of the thumb at its IP joint is caused by a constriction of the anular ligament of the MP joint at the level of the sesamoid bones in combination with a fusiform swelling of the tendon of m. flex. poll. long. This tendinous “nodule” cannot glide through the anular ligament, and it is impossible to extend the joint even passively.
