One theory about the origin of the AIDS pandemic is that the virus responsible, HIV, was transmitted to humans from chimpanzees through contaminated polio vaccine. That theory fails some crucial tests.
Experimental oral polio vaccines and acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

TLDR
There is a startling coincidence between places in Africa where Dr Hilary Koprowski's CHAT vaccine was fed, and the first appearances in the world of HIV-1 group M and group-M-related AIDS. Expand

TLDR
The relationship between historiography and the making of scientific facts and history is questioned, suggesting that historians have been too credulous of scientists' testimony. Expand
Vaccine safety–vaccine benefits:science and the public's perception
TLDR
To further the control of disease by vaccination, the need for new vaccines has never been greater, and safe and effective new vaccines to combat infectious diseases, and address the public's concerns are needed. Expand
Lack of evidence for infection with simian immunodeficiency virus in bonobos.
TLDR
To assess the prevalence of SIV in bonobos, a serologic survey of 26 bonobos was performed and found that bonobos and the use of their tissues may pose a potential risk for cross-species transmission of other etiologic agents. Expand
The Politics of a Scientific Meeting: The Origin-of-AIDS Debate at the Royal Society

TLDR
Several dimensions of the politics of science are revealed by analysis of this issue, including the power of scientific editors, the use of the mass media, decisions regarding selection of speakers and organization of the meeting, and epistemological assumptions made by participants. Expand
The Mysterious Origin of Human Immunodeficiency Virus
  • 2011
Perhaps nothing in the health sciences can raise the specter of intense debate more than the origin of the multifarious Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which has reportedly infected an estimatedExpand

The emergence of HIV/AIDS in the Americas and beyond
TLDR
Using HIV-1 gene sequences recovered from archival samples from some of the earliest known Haitian AIDS patients, it is found that subtype B likely moved from Africa to Haiti in or around 1966 and then spread there for some years before successfully dispersing elsewhere. Expand
Matrix and Backstage: Cellular Substrates for Viral Vaccines
TLDR
This review summarizes the diversity of cellular substrates for propagation of viral vaccines from primary tissue explants and embryonated chicken eggs to designed continuous cell lines of human and avian origin. Expand
Chapter 10 – Simian Retroviruses
TLDR
In the natural African simian hosts, SIV does not cause any disease, but experimental infection of captive macaques with certain SIV strains produces a progressive and fatal immunodeficiency syndrome similar to AIDS in humans, making this primate lentivirus model very useful for research into AIDS pathogenesis, vaccines, and antiviral therapy. Human immunodeficiency virus: Phylogeny and the origin of HIV-1
TLDR
It is shown that viruses obtained from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa have a quantitatively different phylogenetic tree structure from those sampled in other parts of the world, indicating that the structure of HIV-1 phylogenies is the result of epidemiological processes acting within human populations alone. Expand
Polio vaccine samples not linked to AIDS
TLDR
Frozen samples of the suspect vaccine are analysed by using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify any HIV-1-related nucleic acids or chimpanzee mitochondrial DNA that might be present, but the findings do not support the hypothesis that HIV- 1 was introduced by oral vaccination against poliovirus. Expand
Vaccine safety: Analysis of oral polio vaccine CHAT stocks
TLDR
Molecular analysis is used to show that two CHAT type-1 polio vaccine stocks were prepared from macaque and not chimpanzee cells, and contain neither human nor simian immunodeficiency virus sequences, supporting the hypothesis that these materials were responsible for the transmission of the AIDS virus to humans. Expand
Molecular Analyses of Oral Polio Vaccine Samples
TLDR
Several early OPV pools were analyzed and found no evidence for the presence of chimpanzee DNA; by contrast, monkey DNA is present. Expand

TLDR
It is reported that recipients of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine show no evidence of infection by endogenous avian retroviruses, even though viral genomes and reverse transcriptase activity have been detected in vaccine preparations. Expand

Origin of HIV-1 in the chimpanzee Pan troglodytes troglodytes
TLDR
The genome of a new SIVcpz strain is sequenced and the subspecies identity of all known SIV cpz-infected chimpanzees is determined, by mitochondrial DNA analysis, and it is found that two chimpanzee subspecies in Africa harbour SIVCPz and that their respective viruses form two highly divergent (but subspecies-specific) phylogenetic lineages. Expand
Unprecedented Degree of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) Group M Genetic Diversity in the Democratic Republic of Congo Suggests that the HIV-1 Pandemic Originated in Central Africa
TLDR
The high number of HIV-1 subtypes cocirculating, the high intrasubtype diversity, and the high numbers of possible recombinant viruses as well as different unclassified strains are all in agreement with an old and mature epidemic in the DRC, suggesting that this region is the epicenter of HIV -1 group M. Expand
Timing the ancestor of the HIV-1 pandemic strains.
TLDR
Using a comprehensive full-length envelope sequence alignment, the date of the last common ancestor of the main group of HIV-1 is estimated to be 1931 (1915-41). Expand
