It has been suggested that chimpanzee kidney cultures may have been used in the preparation of oral polio vaccine stocks used in Africa during the late 1950s, and so could have introduced the primate precursor of the immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 into humans. Here we analyse frozen samples of the suspect vaccine by using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify any HIV-1-related nucleic acids or chimpanzee mitochondrial DNA that might be present, but we have failed to detect either. Our… Expand
Origin of AIDS: Contaminated polio vaccine theory refuted
TLDR
It is shown that SIVcpz is indeed endemic in wild chimpanzees of this region but that the circulating virus is phylogenetically distinct from all strains of HIV-1, providing direct evidence that these chimpanzees were not the source of the human AIDS pandemic. Expand
Mitochondrial DNA and retroviral RNA analyses of archival oral polio vaccine (OPV CHAT) materials: evidence of macaque nuclear sequences confirms substrate identity.
TLDR
Detailed analyses of two samples of OPV, CHAT 10A-11 and CHAT 6039/Yugo, which were used in early human trials of poliovirus vaccination, provide no evidence to support the contention that poliov virus vaccination was responsible for the introduction of HIV into humans and sparking the AIDS pandemic. Expand
Lack of evidence for infection with simian immunodeficiency virus in bonobos.
TLDR
To assess the prevalence of SIV in bonobos, a serologic survey of 26 bonobos was performed and found that bonobos and the use of their tissues may pose a potential risk for cross-species transmission of other etiologic agents. Expand
Natural and iatrogenic factors in human immunodeficiency virus transmission.

TLDR
It seems to me that the oral polio vaccine (OPV) hypothesis for the origins of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome epidemic is less tenable now than one year earlier. Expand
Untruths and consequences: the false hypothesis linking CHAT type 1 polio vaccination to the origin of human immunodeficiency virus.

TLDR
The hypothesis that scientists who worked with the CHAT type 1 attenuated polio strain tested in the former Belgian Congo in the late 1950s had covertly prepared the vaccine in chimpanzee kidney cells contaminated with a simian immunodeficiency virus, which evolved into HIV-1 group M. Expand
The Evolution of Primate Lentiviruses and the Origins of AIDS
The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was first recognized in 1981 (Blattner, 1991) and has become the most globally devastating of the emerging infectious diseases threatening human healthExpand
The humoral immune response to HIV-1: Consequences for vaccine design.
TLDR
The possible role of non-NAbs with complement was investigated using sequential sera and viruses expressing gpl20 Env glycoproteins amplified from blood samples from a cohort of newly HIV-1 infected patients, and a new approach was investigated to generate a recombinant vaccine to HIV- 1. Expand
Past Present and Future Status of HIV-AIDS Pandemic Problem in World
TLDR
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has devastated families, communities and whole continents, and has seen the epidemic set back the development of countries by many decades, widen the gulf between rich and poor nations, and push already stigmatized groups closer to the margins of society. Expand
Cross-species infections.

TLDR
Cross-species viral and other infections are reviewed historically with respect to the evolution of virulence and the concern about iatrogenic enhancement of cross-species transfer by medical procedures akin to xenotransplantation. Expand
Polio vaccines exonerated
One theory about the origin of the AIDS pandemic is that the virus responsible, HIV, was transmitted to humans from chimpanzees through contaminated polio vaccine. That theory fails some crucialExpand

Live poliomyelitis virus vaccines. Present status and problems for the future.
TLDR
It can be said that live virus vaccination is approaching its adolescence, and in field trials unparalleled in magnitude, approximately 100 million persons were given live virus in order that the action of the attenuated virus might be studied. Expand
An African HIV-1 sequence from 1959 and implications for the origin of the epidemic
TLDR
Multiple phylogenetic analyses not only authenticate this case as the oldest known HIV-1 infection, but also place its viral sequence near the ancestral node of subtypes B and D in the major group, indicating that these HIV- 1 subtypes, and perhaps all major-group viruses, may have evolved from a single introduction into the African population not long before 1959. Expand
Vaccination with the CHAT strain of type 1 attenuated poliomyelitis virus in Leopoldville, Congo. 3. Safety and efficacy during the first 21 months of study.
TLDR
There being an apparent shift in the predominant causative agent from type 1 to type 3 poliovirus concomitant with the completion of the type 1 vaccination campaign, the present paper is a report on a further twelve-month period of observation. Expand
Oral poliovirus vaccination in newborn African infants. The inhibitory effect of breast feeding.
TLDR
Whether immunization of breast-fed newborn infants with attenuated poliovirus would have had an inhibitory effect on live virus vaccination is sought. Expand

Responding to The River
TLDR
In the book The River, author Edward Hooper suggests that the authors covertly used chimpanzee cells to produce the live oral polio vaccine (OPV) that was used in the first mass campaign with OPV in the former Belgian Congo. Expand
The River: A Journey to the Source of HIV and AIDS
TLDR
The thesis: that the origins of both HIV-1 and HIV-2 result from contamination of poliovirus vaccines in the last half of the 1950s by simian immunodeficiency viruses of chimpanzees forAIDS-1, or mangabeys for HIV- 2, is presented in The River is wide. Expand
Evolutionary rates of insertion and deletion in noncoding nucleotide sequences of primates.
TLDR
This work compared six sets of nuclear and mitochondrial noncoding DNA sequences of primates and obtained the estimates of the evolutionary rate of insertion and deletion, and the maximum-parsimony principle was applied to locate insertions and deletions on a given phylogenetic tree. Expand
