Two incidents of Polar Bear predation on Belugas which occurred off the coast of western Alaska in April 1984 are described. A single subadult Beluga was killed at a small lead in the Chukchi Sea, probably by a female bear with three cubs, and at least 40 whales were killed at an ice entrapment by one or more bears in the northern Bering Sea. A review of such occurrences off Alaska, Canada, and Eurasia indicates that Belugas are normal prey of Polar Bears. Bear predation may occur when whales… Expand
Characterization of polar bear (Ursus maritimus) diets in the Canadian High Arctic
TLDR
Diet composition and ecological factors supporting the high density of polar bears in these three separate subpopulations of Baffin Bay, Gulf of Boothia, and Lancaster Sound were characterized and seasonal variation in polar bear foraging was related to known migration patterns of marine mammals. Predators and impacts of predation
Abstract Killer whales are the only predator of bowhead whales and are increasingly present in the Arctic. The ecology and population sizes of Arctic killer whales are poorly understood, but targetedExpand
Distribution and Movements of Beluga Whales from the Eastern Chukchi Sea Stock During Summer and Early Autumn

Olfactory epithelium and ontogeny of the nasal chambers in the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus).
TLDR
The results suggest that bowhead whales have a functional sense of smell, which they may use to find prey. Expand

Polar bear predation of ringed and bearded seals in the land-fast sea ice habitat
Predation of seals by the polar bear, Ursus maritimus, was not significant in the Western Arctic. In the High Central and Eastern Arctic, and along southeastern Baffin Island, bear predation of theExpand
An Attack by a Polar Bear on a Juvenile Beluga
TLDR
This paper constitutes only the third documented account of an attack on a beluga by a polar bear in the Canadian Arctic, and carries deep but well-healed scars on the left dorso-lateral aspect caudal to the dorsal ridge. Expand
Aspects of Predation of Seals by Polar Bears
TLDR
Ringed seals and bearded seals killed by polar bears in the western arctic and the eastern high arctic were collected to study interspecific relationships and scavenging of unutilized seal remains. Expand
