The plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) plays a keystone role in the grassland ecosystem on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) (Smith and Foggin, 1999; Lai and Smith, 2003), but in spite of its ecological importance it has been targeted for widespread poisoning including across the Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve (SNNR).
