Introduction. Water hemlock, which encompasses a range of species divided across two genera (Cicuta and Oenanthe), are regarded as being among the most poisonous plants both in North America and in the United Kingdom. Despite their toxicity, the literature consists almost entirely of case reports. Aim. The aim of this review is to summarize this literature by covering all aspects of taxonomy and botanical characterization, principal toxins, basic pharmacology including mechanisms of toxicity…

Three Poisonous Plants (Oenanthe, Cicuta and Anamirta) That Antagonise the Effect of Γ-Aminobutyric Acid in Human Brain

The third plant Anamirta derives from South-East Asia and contains a powerful convulsant, picrotoxin, which has been used from time immemorial to catch fish, and more recently to poison Birds of Paradise.

A hemlock salad: a case report of super-refractory status epilepticus after accidental hemlock ingestion

A case of convulsive SRSE after accidental ingestion of hemlock, most likely C. maculatum, in a patient without a previous history of epilepsy or seizures is presented in aPreviously healthy 41-year-old woman, admitted to the emergency department in convulsive SE.

Nicotinic plant poisoning

Exposure to plants containing nicotine and nicotine-like alkaloids can lead to severe poisoning but, with prompt supportive care, patients should make a full recovery.

Plant toxins-useful and harmful effects

Since plant toxins show many useful effects they can be used in treating respective diseases and can be modified to show better affinity and efficacy.

Neurobehavioral evaluation of mice dosed with water hemlock green seeds and tubers

Water hemlock are plants of the genus Cicuta and are toxic to animals and humans. The primary toxin is cicutoxin, which is abundant in the tubers, but less abundant in other parts of the plant. Other

POISONING WITH WATER HEMLOCK (CICUTA MACULATA): REPORT OF SEVENTEEN CASES

Recently, in the city of New Haven, a series of cases of acute poisoning occurred simultaneously and from the same source, and the resulting investigation which determined the cause to be Cicuta prompts me to report these cases briefly, so as to direct attention to the existence of this plant.

The potency in inhibition of the specific binding of the noncompetitive GABA antagonist, [(3)H]EBOB, to GABA-gated Cl(-) channels of GABA receptors in rat brain cortex was found to be correlated with acute toxicity, indicating that the ability to bind to these channels plays an important role in the acute toxicity of these compounds.
