Pliocene Bovidae (Mammalia) from the Hadar Formation of Hadar and Ledi-Geraru, Lower Awash, Ethiopia
@inproceedings{Geraads2012PlioceneB, title={Pliocene Bovidae (Mammalia) from the Hadar Formation of Hadar and Ledi-Geraru, Lower Awash, Ethiopia}, author={Denis Geraads and Ren{\'e} Bobe and Kaye E. Reed}, year={2012} }
ABSTRACT We revise here the entire collection of Bovidae from the Pliocene Hadar Formation collected at Hadar and Ledi-Geraru, Lower Awash, Ethiopia. Some additions are provided to previously published descriptions, and other forms are described. The complete list includes 28 species, but is dominated by a new species of impala, Aepyceros datoadeni, a kob that we assign to Kobus oricornus, although it belongs to a type distinct from the Omo one, a lineage of alcelaphins that is poorly known…

ABSTRACT
Fossil bovids are described from the late Pliocene site of Ledi-Geraru, mainly from the Gurumaha and Lee Adoyta sedimentary packages (2.8–2.6 Ma). Finds include taxa already known from the…

The Hadar giraffids belong to the genera Giraffa and Sivatherium. We recognize two species in the former genus; distinguishing between them on dental elements is straightforward, but it is…

The artiodactyl association of Küçükçekmece points to a Vallesian age, possibly between 9.6–9.4 Ma, while the predominance of Dorcatherium and Palaeogiraffa among artiodACTyls indicates wooded environmental conditions, whereas the taxonomic spectrum of artiodactoryls reveals main influences from both Anatolia and Southern Balkans.

A phylogenetic analysis suggests that the T. nakuae lineage is related to the extant bongo, relating this living but enigmatic forest antelope to the fossil record, and one resulting palaeoecological hypothesis is that the bongo's modern fragmented range represents the relicts of a much more widely distributed late Pliocene African forest belt.
