To characterize some of the physiological features of Japanese beef breeds, plasma concentrations of insulin and metabolites and carcass composition were measured in five Japanese Black, five Japanese Brown, and four Holstein steers (6.2 mo; 164 kg). The steers were raised under typical feeding conditions in Japan until they were slaughtered at 600 to 700 kg BW. Blood samples were collected at 8 mo of age (average BW, 194 kg) and at 300, 400, 500, and 600 kg BW. Plasma insulin concentrations…

Differences between the initial mean NEFA and that at 24 h after the start were significant in both breeds, but S increased significantly more than B at and after 8 h from the Start, suggesting that nutritional status sensitively reflects genetic background.
Plasma leptin concentration during 45 days in pre-weaning Japanese Black and Holstein calves
- Medicine
- 2003
Breed of the animals influenced on plasma leptin and insulin significantly (P < 0.05), and high values were observed in Japanese Black than in Holstein calves, which has been suggested that the rate of body fat contents in JapaneseBlack cattle is naturally higher than inHolstein cattle.
Genetic parameters of serum vitamin A and total cholesterol concentrations and the genetic relationships with carcass traits in an F1 cross between Japanese Black sires and Holstein dams.

Results indicate serum vitamin A and total cholesterol concentrations could be effective physiological indicators for improving carcass traits.
Higher Intake of Milk-Replacer Pre-Weaning Enhances Post-Weaning Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 Levels in Japanese Black Cattle

It is suggested that feeding calves a high volume of milk replacer during nursing will increase IGF-1 secretion well beyond weaning, suggesting that the levels were sustained independent of the influences of both GH and nutrient intake.

Results suggest that although serum leptin concentrations were not significantly correlated to the marbling scores they may be related to the genetic advantage for marbling in Japanese Black cattle.
Energy expenditure, urea kinetics, and body weight gain within a segregating resource family population.
- Biology, MedicineJournal of dairy science

It is demonstrated that differences in energy expenditure and urea kinetics result in differences in average daily gain and carcass traits and vice versa in F(2) crossbred bulls with common beef and dairy genetic backgrounds.
