}The plasma concentration of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol was measured in 13 adult Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni), seven adult spur-thighed tortoises (Testudo graeca) and two adult marginated tortoises (Testudo marginata) during 2004. They were healthy, of both sexes, and kept in captivity under natural unfiltered sunlight in southern England with no dietary sources of cholecalciferol. Blood samples were taken in March, June and August, and the concentration of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol did…

Comparison of total calcium, ionised calcium and albumin concentrations in the plasma of captive tortoises (Testudo species)
- MedicineVeterinary Record
- 2009
Total calcium levels were a poor indication of ionised calcium levels, which constituted between 18 and 57 per cent of the total calcium value, and albumin values did not appear significantly affected by season.
Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) concentrations in Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni) exposed to natural sunlight and two artificial ultraviolet radiation sources.
- MedicineAmerican journal of veterinary research
- 2012
Exposure to sunlight at a latitude similar to that of the natural geographic range is recommended for healthy and calcium-deficient tortoises and plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) concentrations differed between Tortoises exposed to sunlight and those exposed to artificial UVB sources.

The likelihood of tortoises developing pyramidal growth syndrome, which can be used as an indicator of the quality of tortoise husbandry, is high in animals kept in a terrarium and/or fed a diet of <80% grasses and weeds in summer and varies among species, with a higher incidence in Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni).
EVALUATION OF PLASMA 25-HYDROXYVITAMIN D, IONIZED CALCIUM, AND PARATHYROID HORMONE IN GREEN SEA TURTLES (CHELONIA MYDAS) EXPOSED TO DIFFERENT INTENSITIES OF ULTRAVIOLET B RADIATION.

UVB exposure is an important source of 25-hydroxyvitamin D for green sea turtles and has significant effects on calcium metabolism in this species, suggesting that current mammalian-based PTH assays are not valid for reptiles.

Calcium and iCa values were significantly lower and PTH and P were significantly higher in turtles in rehabilitation than in wild turtles, suggesting that dietary requirements are not being met in the captive population.

Lack of Association between Exposure to Natural Sunlight and Dental Disease in French Companion Rabbits
- Medicine, Biology
- 2017
Dental disease is undoubtedly among the most common conditions of companion rabbits, with a reported prevalence ranging from 12.2% to 38.1% and possible causes include metabolic bone disease associated with calcium and/or vitamin D deficiencies, vitamin D excess, genetic or congenital factors, trauma, iatrogenic malocclusion and insufficient dental wear because of a lack of abrasive food.

Treatment will involve both stabilising the reptile and correcting underlying husbandry and dietary factors and calcium and vitamin D supplementation should be provided and supportive treatment is indicated.

Evidence is provided that concomitant administration of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] would alter the response of serum 25-OHD to challenge with vitamin D and inhibits the hepatic synthesis of its precursor 25- OHD in man.
