W ildfi res are increasing in number, intensity, and size. Five of the most signifi cant wildfi re seasons in the United States since 1960, as measured by total acres burned, have occurred since 2000.1 The vegetation or fuel profi le, a major factor determining fi re behavior, is studied in two aspects: vertical and horizontal arrangement, and amount.
