Pityriasis versicolor is a superficial fungal infection of the skin. It is caused byMalassezia, a lipophilic dimorphic fungus. This fungus is part of the normal skin flora but can cause disease when it converts to its pathogenic hyphal form. Certain environmental, genetic, and immunological factors can predispose to this pathogenic conversion and contribute to the development of disease. The fungus grows best in warm and humid conditions, explaining the higher prevalence of pityriasis…
Pityriasis Versicolor in Children and Adolescents: an Update
TLDR
Although PV is a common disorder, extensive research is necessary to better understand the pathophysiology of the disease, immunological characteristics of the pathogen-host relationship and resources needed to precisely diagnose, treat, and avoid its chronic and recurrent course.
Tinea Imbricata: An Overview.
TLDR
In most cases, a spot diagnosis of tinea imbricata can be made based on the characteristic skin lesions consisting of scaly, concentric annular rings and overlapping plaques that are pruritic, and combined therapy of a topical antifungal and keratolytic agent may increase the cure rate.
Fungal infections
TLDR
Systemic fungal infection can involve other organs, including the respiratory, cardiovascular and central nervous systems, and occur particularly in patients who are immunosuppressed or who have recently travelled to areas where specific fungal infections are endemic.
308-nm excimer laser: a hopeful and optional therapy for pityriasis versicolor
TLDR
308-nm excimer laser can be considered as a hopeful and optional therapy for PV and there was a statistically significant reduction in the clinical scores compared with pretreatment scores and with the placebo group.
CCID_A_195166 303..309
TLDR
This is the first study describing the dermoscopic features of PV in such a large number of patients and may help to establish dermoscopy as an important auxiliary tool for the diagnosis of PV.
Diagnosis and Management of Cutaneous Tinea Infections.
TLDR
This case-based review summarizes the epidemiology, relevant clinical features, microbiology, and management considerations for commonly encountered tinea infections.
Pityriasis in dermatology: an updated review
TLDR
It is important for dermatologists to be aware and updated on all pityriasis conditions in dermatology, with some common and others quite rare.
The world’s ten most feared fungi
TLDR
Although the world’s top ten most feared fungi are targeted, numerous others are causing serious concern to human health, plant production, forestry, other animals and the authors' factories and dwellings.

Pityriasis versicolor prevalence by age and gender
TLDR
A significant overall male preponderance was detected and in most of the 5-year age group strata, men had higher prevalence rates than women, and in late adolescence, postpubertal age and twice in adulthood this difference reached significance.
Evoked scale sign of tinea versicolor.
TLDR
The “evoked scale sign” of TV is demonstrated, in which a visible layer of thin scale is elicited by either stretching or scraping the affected skin, which can be explained by the pathologic effect of M furfur on the skin.
Efficacy of itraconazole in the prophylactic treatment of pityriasis (tinea) versicolor.
TLDR
Prophylactic itraconazole treatment is efficacious for pityriasis versicolor after 6 months, as is itrconazole in the treatment of pityriases versicolors.
Pityriasis versicolor: a systematic review of interventions.
TLDR
Most topical and systemic treatments used for pityriasis versicolor are effective compared with placebo, and data suggest that longer durations of treatment and higher concentrations of active agents produce greater cure rates.
Anxiety and depression in patients with pityriasis rosea compared to patients with tinea versicolor.
TLDR
Results of the present study indicate that patients with PR and TV are at risk for psychopathology.
The Malassezia Genus in Skin and Systemic Diseases
TLDR
Seven new taxa isolated from healthy and lesional human and animal skin have been accepted and metabolomic research resulted in the proposal of a hypothesis on the contribution of Malassezia-synthesized aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) ligands to basal cell carcinoma through UV radiation-induced carcinogenesis.
Superficial fungal infections
The incidence of tinea versicolor in central Sweden.
In a survey of 3302 people in an area of central Sweden, tinea versicolor was diagnosed in 0.5% of males and 0.3% of females; all those infected were adults. Tinea versicolor is much less common in
Systematic Review of Systemic Treatments for Tinea Versicolor and Evidence-Based Dosing Regimen Recommendations
TLDR
Based on the efficacy evidence and potential safety concerns, this review supports the following dosing regimens: 200 mg/d for 5 or 7 days of itraconazole, 300 mg/wk for 2 weeks of fluconazoles, and 200 mg /d for 2 days of pramiconazole.
