We have conducted a pilot clinical study to not only investigate the sub-THz spectra of ex-vivo fresh human whole blood of 28 patients following 8-hours fasting guideline, but also to find out the critical blood ingredients of which the concentration dominantly affects those sub-THz spectra. A great difference between the sub-THz absorption properties of human blood among different people was observed, while the difference can be up to ~15% of the averaged absorption coefficient of the 28…

Quantification of triglyceride levels in fresh human blood by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy

The results indicated that terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) can be used to quantify triglyceride (TG) levels in human blood and demonstrated that the THz absorption coefficients have a significant negative linear correlation with TG concentration.

A Complex Study of the Peculiarities of Blood Serum Absorption of Rats with Experimental Liver Cancer

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in the 0.05–1.0 THz frequency range was used to study the blood serum of rats in the dynamics of experimental liver cancer and it was shown that there is a change in the biochemical composition of the blood, including a decrease in the protein content, by the 28th day of the experiment.

Study of blood and its components by terahertz pulsed spectroscopy

The report will provide a review of the known data and the own studies on THz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) of blood and its components at normal states and some pathology, and conclude that the dielectric properties of blood in THz range are satisfactory.

High Sensitivity of T-Ray for Thrombus Sensing

The high sensitivity of 200–270 GHz T-ray is shown to distinguish thrombus formation at its early stage from uncoagulated blood and supports the significant role of platelet-activated thrombotic cascade on the measured T-Ray absorption change.

Pore-size dependent THz absorption of nano-confined water.

Spectroscopy analysis of liquid water confined in mesoporous silica materials of two different pore sizes at room temperatures finds that stronger confinement with a smaller pore size causes reduced THz absorption, indicating reduced water mobility due to confinement.

In vivo study of human skin using pulsed terahertz radiation

This work conducts the first ever systematic in vivo study of the response of terahertz radiation to normal skin, and demonstrates that the FDTD model can be applied to biological tissue.

Characterization of blood using terahertz waves

It is shown that terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) can be used to characterize the blood and demonstrate that THz-TDS imaging can facilitate the quantitative analysis of blood.

Application of time-domain THz spectroscopy for studying blood plasma of rats with experimental diabetes

The absorption spectra of rat blood plasma have been studied by time-domain THz spectroscopy in the frequency range from 0.1 to 2.0 THz. The absorption coefficient of blood plasma is found to be

This in vivo study not only indicates that THz transmission imaging can distinguish cancer from the surrounding fatty tissue, but also with a high sensitivity, but will encourage broad and further investigations for future early cancer screening by using THz imaging system.

Probing the collective vibrational dynamics of a protein in liquid water by terahertz absorption spectroscopy

The absorption spectrum of solvated bovine serum albumin is experimentally determined and the shape of the observed spectrum resembles the ideal quadratic spectral density expected for a disordered ionic solid, indicating that the terahertz normal mode density may be modeled, to first order, as that of a three‐dimensional elastic nanoparticle with an aperiodic charge distribution.
