We consider pilot pattern optimization for single user single-input-single-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing transmission over doubly-selective channels, assuming least squares channel estimation with linear interpolation and extrapolation. Our focus is on small data packet transmission which is typical for machine-type communications. We compare diamond-shaped pilot patterns to rectangular-shaped pilot patterns.
