Abstract A brief irradiation with red light was as effective as continuous white light and kinetin in arresting the losses of chlorophyll and protein in detached whole leaves and leaf discs of cucumber and tomato plants. The effect of red light was completely reversed by a consecutive brief irradiation with far-red light. These results suggesr the involvement of the phytochrome system.
