Four species of nitrogen-fixing heterocystous cyanobacteria were compared with respect to induction of hydrogenase activity. Two of the strains contained phycoerythrin and built up high levels of carbohydrate storage material when grown in batch culture under nitrogen-fixing conditions and continuous illumination.
