PTH exerts a range of effects on the kidneys from inhibition of phosphate absorption to stimulation of calcium recovery. Other effects on ion transport and acid–base balance are also described. PTH additionally exerts metabolic actions that include ammoniagenesis and gluconeogenesis. The actions of PTH in the kidney are mediated by the canonical type 1 PTH receptor (PTHR1).
