One of the world's leading marine science institutes has selected a physicist as director for the first time. Susan Avery, 57, will take up the position as head of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in the US in February. Avery, an atmospheric physicist, has spent the past 25 years in research and administrative roles at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She will also be the first woman to head the 77-year-old institution.
