Abstract Substitution of Co 2+ for Mn 2+ in concanavalin A generates characteristic circular dichroism and magnetic circular dichroism spectra which are strongly affected by the concentration of Ca 2+ . With three equivalents of Ca 2+ per protomer of [(Co 2+ )Con A], no spectral effects of addition of α-methyl- d -glucopyranoside can be demonstrated.
