The physical and hormonal characteristics of 60 male-to-female transsexuals and 30 female-to-male transsexuals were measured before or during treatment with commonly used forms and dosages of hormones. Only two patients (both female-to-male) had either a congenital defect in hormonal production or abnormal genital development. Patients were seen at 3- to 6-month intervals for an average of 18 months. The response to therapy was examined over time; physical parameters, hormonal concentrations…
The Response of the Menstrual Cycle to Initiation of Hormonal Therapy in Transgender Men
TLDR
The initiation of low to moderate testosterone was sufficient in leading to menstrual cessation in the majority of patients by 6 months and nearly all by 1 year, and there was individual variability in the time to cessation with little correlation to testosterone dose.
METABOLIC EFFECTS OF HORMONE THERAPY IN TRANSGENDER PATIENTS.

Endocrine practice : official journal of the American College of Endocrinology and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists
  • 2016
TLDR
Transgender hormone therapy was found to be safe in this retrospective study and there were significant increases in body mass index, creatinine, hemoglobin, and hematocrit although statistically significant, these changes were minimal for both cohorts.
Cross-Sex Hormones and Metabolic Parameters in Adolescents With Gender Dysphoria
TLDR
Testosterone use was associated with increased hemoglobin and hematocrit, increased BMI, and lowered high-density lipoprotein levels; estrogen was associatedWith lower testosterone and alanine aminotransferase levels; Otherwise, cross-sex hormone administration in adolescents was not associated with significant differences in the selected metabolic parameters over time.
Cross-Sex Hormone Treatment and Psychobiological Changes in Transsexual Persons: Two-Year Follow-Up Data.
TLDR
The efficacy of CHT intervention in improving subjective perception of one's own body, which was partially associated with objective changes, supports the efficacy ofCHT intervention on psychobiological well-being in GDs.
Endocrine Therapy of Transsexualism and Potential Complications of Long-Term Treatment
TLDR
It is clear that estrogen as well as androgen therapy have a dual role: induction of feminization or virilization and suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis leading to a reduction of endogenous estradiol or testosterone secretion.
Review of studies of androgen treatment of female-to-male transsexuals: effects and risks of administration of androgens to females.
TLDR
High-dose testosterone administration to female-to-male transsexuals treated between 1975 and 2004 demonstrated that, while some markers of cardiovascular risk factors showed a shift to a more negative risk profile, others were not affected androgen effects on cardiovascular risk markers are not universally negative.
A Follow-Up Study for Estimating the Effectiveness of a Cross-Gender Hormone Substitution Therapy on Transsexual Patients
TLDR
With the cross-gender hormone regimen performed by the authors it is possible to generate less side effects in the treatment of transsexual patients than described before.
Long-term administration of testosterone undecanoate every 3 months for testosterone supplementation in female-to-male transsexuals.
TLDR
The treatment of female-to-male transsexuals with long-acting testosterone undecanoate may be a feasible and safe option for testosterone augmentation in these subjects, however, monitoring of blood pressure should not be ignored during the treatment, to identify patients liable to develop hypertension.
Evolution of Gonadal Axis After Sex Reassignment Surgery in Transsexual Patients in the Spanish Public Health System
TLDR
The increase in gonadotropins after surgery was greater in the FtM than in the MtF, with the increase continuing more than one year after surgery, and no variable was significantly associated with this different level of gonadotropic hormone.

Physical and hormonal evaluation of transsexual patients during hormonal therapy
TLDR
Based on the information found in this study, it is recommended 0.1 mg/d of ethinyl estradiol for the noncastrate male-to-female transsexual and 200 mg of intramuscular testosterone cypionate every two weeks for thenoncastrate female- to-male transsexual.
A survey of transsexual hormonal treatment in twenty gender‐treatment centers
TLDR
Twenty centers for transsexual treatment responded to a survey concerning their current hormonal treatment plan before and after gonadectomy, and the great diversity of reported therapies highlights the need for a standard hormonal treatment regimen.
Presurgical Adjustment in Male Transsexuals with and without Hormonal Treatment
TLDR
It is further suggested that personality research with presurgical transsexuals include a drug hormone history and a more rigorous criteria for psychopathology may be required for those persons already exposed to hormonal therapy.
Sex hormones and female homosexuality: A critical examination
To ascertain the validity of hormonal theories of human homosexuality, which are based on animal research, this article reviews psychoendocrine data on lesbian and transsexual women. Sex hormone
Plasma testosterone levels and female transsexualism
TLDR
By these procedures, the endocrinological status of the female transsexuals was found to be the same as that of the typical female, meaning female transsexualism cannot be simply ascribed to altered levels of testosterone during adulthood.
The 24-hour secretory pattern of LH and the response to LHRH in transsexual men
TLDR
Transsexualism may be associated with a neuroendocrine defect in the hypothalamus or pituitsary that is characterized by high-frequency, high-amplitude pulsatile secretion of pituitary LH.
Comparative clinical evaluation of estrogenic preparations by the menopausal and amenorrheal indices.
TLDR
It is desirable that the relative activity of estrogens be based upon human ‘assay’ rather than biologic or chemical standardization procedures, because greater variability of response and less predictability of results occur than in animal assay procedures.
Sex hormones and male homosexuality in comparative perspective
Animal research has demonstrated the modifiability of sex-dimorphic mating behavior by hormone and brain manipulation, especially in subprimate mammals, and has led to radical attempts at treating
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SEXUAL CHARACTERISTICS: STUDY OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT IN MALES FROM BIRTH THROUGH MATURITY, WITH BIOMETRIC STUDY OF PENIS AND TESTES
TLDR
This study was undertaken in an attempt to ascertain the actual variations among normal boys and men as to the size of the testes and of the penis and the degree of development of secondary sexual characteristics.
