Motor neuron disease (MND) is a devastating neurodegenerative condition associated with considerable disability and a poor prognosis. Despite improvements in symptomatic management in recent years, few therapies are available which modify survival. A case control study on ALS patients resident in the catchment area of an ALS center, compared to geographical matched controls, recruited with a 1:2 ratio found that an extra 10 kJ/kg/day of PA was consistently associated with an increased risk of ALS and that an additional 10 min/ day of vigorous PA was also associated with the odds of ALS.
