OBJECTIVE: To identify correlates of objectively measured moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in children during preschool attendance. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included data from 426 apparently healthy Danish children (49.5% boys), 5 to 6 years of age enrolled in 42 randomly selected preschools. The percentage of time spent in MVPA (≥574 counts/15 second) during preschool attendance was measured using ActiGraph accelerometers over 4.3 preschool days in May and June in 2009…
Physical activity and motor skills in children attending 43 preschools: a cross-sectional study
TLDR
The gender differences in relation to body mass index, motor skills and PA, including PA patterns by the day type and time of day are described, indicating that especially girls are very susceptible to the environment offered for PA during preschool attendance.
UK Preschool-aged children’s physical activity levels in childcare and at home: a cross-sectional exploration
TLDR
Young children, and particularly boys, accumulate more MVPA in care compared to at home and future research should identify factors accounting for this difference and consider targeting non-care time in intervention efforts to increase higher-intensity activity and decrease sedentary time in preschoolers.
Physical Activity in Different Preschool Settings: An Exploratory Study
TLDR
More open preschool systems such as those in Basel, Freiburg, and Landau do not lead to more PA “per se” compared to the highly regimented desk-based system in France, and a higher number of children in a family along with the mother's and child's anthropometrical status are predictors of engagement in PA.
The Role of Preschool Hours in Achieving Physical Activity Recommendations for Preschoolers
TLDR
The main findings were that preschoolers engaged in very little TPA and MVPA during school hours, and children showed significantly higher MVPA levels on days with versus without structured movement sessions, and the contribution of the structured sessions to MVPA was significantly higher than that of recess time.

TLDR
The findings from this review suggest the use of a multicomponent model, including the factors evaluated, may be the optimal strategy to increase activity levels in preschool children.
Childcare Correlates of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, and Adiposity in Preschool Children: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of the SPLASHY Study
TLDR
More frequent child-initiated interactions and mixing different ages in CC, the presence of a written PA policy, and a larger CC surface are correlates of PA and SB during CC attendance days and/or of overall PA.
Individual-, home- and preschool-level correlates of preschool children’s sedentary time
TLDR
Interventions aimed at reducing children’s ST should develop strategies targeting established correlates of preschoolers’ ST covering individual-, home- and preschool-level factors.

Physical Activity Among Children Attending Preschools
TLDR
Children's physical activity levels were highly variable among preschools, which suggests that preschool policies and practices have an important influence on the overall activity levels of the children the preschools serve.
Directly observed physical activity levels in preschool children.
TLDR
The study indicates that young children are physically inactive during most of their time in preschool, and the preschool that a child attended was a stronger predictor of physical activity level than any other factor examined.
Influences of Preschool Policies and Practices on Children's Physical Activity
TLDR
Children in preschools which may have more resources and better quality appear to show both more sedentary behavior and more MVPA, compared with children who attended preschools with lower quality.
Policies and Characteristics of the Preschool Environment and Physical Activity of Young Children
TLDR
Examination of policies and characteristics of preschools and the extent to which they influence the physical activity of 3- to 5-year-old children during the preschool day found children spent fewer minutes per hour in sedentary activity and more minutes perhour in moderate/vigorous physical activity in preschools that had higher quality scores.
The contribution of preschool playground factors in explaining children's physical activity during recess
TLDR
In preschool children physical activity during outdoor play is associated with modifiable playground factors and only in boys a hard playground surface was a borderline significant predictor for higher physical activity levels.
Personal characteristics and demographic factors associated with objectively measured physical activity in children attending preschool.
TLDR
The individual preschool, gender and age of preschool children were strong predictors of physical activity (R2-total model=(0.36-0.39)) during preschool attendance.
Accelerometer measured level of physical activity indoors and outdoors during preschool time in Sweden and the United States.
TLDR
Compared preschoolers' PA in Swedish and in US settings and objectively examined differences boys' and girls' indoor and outdoor PA regarding different intensity levels and sedentary behavior found physical activity counts/minutes was significantly higher outdoors vs. indoors in both Malmö and Raleigh.
Are Preschool Children Active Enough? Objectively Measured Physical Activity Levels
TLDR
Physical activity levels in this sample of preschool children were far lower than recommended and only 26% reached the standard of 120 min of total activity.
Attributes of Child Care Centers and Outdoor Play Areas Associated With Preschoolers’ Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior
TLDR
It was found that children were mostly sedentary while in child care and the possibility of enhancing preschoolers’ activity levels through changing these attributes was suggested.
