The Zygomycota is an ecologically heterogenous assemblage of nonzoosporic fungi comprising two classes, Zygomycetes and Trichomycetes. Phylogenetic analyses have suggested that the phylum is polyphyletic; two of four orders of Trichomycetes are related to the Mesomycetozoa (protists) that diverged near the fungal/animal split. Current circumscription of the Zygomycota includes only orders with representatives that produce zygospores. We present a molecular-based phylogeny including recognized…
Long rDNA amplicon sequencing of insect-infecting nephridiophagids reveals their affiliation to the Chytridiomycota and a potential to switch between hosts
TLDR
Using long-read sequencing of the nearly complete rDNA operon of numerous further species obtained from cockroaches and earwigs to improve the resolution of the phylogenetic analysis, a robust affiliation of nephridiophagids with the Chytridiomycota is found.
Phylogenetic Revision and Patterns of Host Specificity in the Fungal Subphylum Entomophthoromycotina
TLDR
The phylogeny of this subphylum is reassessed based on conserved genes encoding ribosomal RNA and RNA polymerase II subunits, confirming their general monophyly, but challenging previously assumed taxonomic relationships within and between particular clades.
Fungal evolution: diversity, taxonomy and phylogeny of the Fungi
TLDR
The current status of the phylogeny and taxonomy of fungi is reviewed, providing an overview of the main defined groups and the main phylogenetic and taxonomical controversies and hypotheses in the field.
Phylogenetic and morphological analyses of the mycoparasitic genus Piptocephalis
TLDR
This study addresses two aspects: Piptocephalis systematics and analyses of the length and inter- and infraspecific variation of the nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 = ITS) region.
Introducing ribosomal tandem repeat barcoding for fungi
TLDR
This work was able to generate high‐quality reference data with Nanopore sequencing in a high‐throughput manner, showing that the generation of reference data can be achieved on a regular desktop computer without the involvement of any large‐scale sequencing facility.
The dawn of symbiosis between plants and fungi
TLDR
Evidence is presented that several species representing the earliest groups of land plants are symbiotic with fungi of the Mucoromycotina, raising the possibility that terrestrialization was facilitated by these fungi rather than, as conventionally proposed, by members of the Glomeromycota.
Freshwater Trichomycetes from Northern Thailand
TLDR
It is shown that trichomycetes are abundant in northern Thailand and undoubtedly many other Harpellales, beyond the taxa reported here, are present especially in unexplored regions of the country and in different hosts, habitats and times of the year.
