Three species of Microthoracids, Lopezoterenia paratorpens n. sp., Trochiliopsis australis Foissner et al., 1988 and Discotricha papillifera Tuffrau, 1954, collected from Chinese coastal waters, were investigated using live observation and protargol staining methods. Lopezoterenia paratorpens n. sp. was characterized by its squarely shaped cortical papillae and by dorsal kineties which contained loosely distributed basal bodies. Trochiliopsis australis was revealed to have two oral membranelles…
Morphology and phylogeny of three karyorelictean ciliates (Protista, Ciliophora), including two novel species, Trachelocerca chinensis sp. n. and Tracheloraphis dragescoi sp. n.
TLDR
Phylogenetic analyses based on small-subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequences indicated that the genera Trachelocerca and Tracheloraphis are closely related but that neither of them appears to be a clearly monophyletic group.
Morphology and phylogeny of three trachelocercids (Protozoa, Ciliophora, Karyorelictea), with description of two new species and insight into the evolution of the family Trachelocercidae
TLDR
Two new hypotheses about the evolution of the seven genera within Trachelocercidae are suggested, based on either infraciliature or molecular evidence, that suppose the compound circumoral kineties in the oral apparatus is a plesiomorphic feature while the single circumoral Kinety is synapomorphic.
Morphology and Phylogeny of Two Novel Ciliates, Arcanisutura chongmingensis n. gen., n. sp. and Naxella paralucida n. sp. from Shanghai, China
TLDR
Phylogenetic analyses show that Arcanisutura forms a sister clade to other synhymeniid genera, namely, Chilodontopsis, Orthodonella, and Zosterodasys; Naxella is most closely related to Nassula spp.
Morphological and molecular characterization of Parafurgasonia zhangi spec. nov. and Chilodonella acuta Kahl, 1931 (Protozoa, Ciliophora), from a soil habitat of Saudi Arabia.
TLDR
Phylogenetic analyses based on small-subunit rRNA gene sequences showed that P. zhangi was closer to species of the Colpodidiidae rather than the Furgasoniidae represented by Furg Masonia blochmanni, and Chilodonella acuta clustered with its congener Chilidonella uncinata but was a well-outlined species ofThe genus.
The All-Data-Based Evolutionary Hypothesis of Ciliated Protists with a Revised Classification of the Phylum Ciliophora (Eukaryota, Alveolata)
TLDR
The molecular dataset was expanded with representatives from 55 orders and all major lineages and the monophyly of classes Phyllopharyngea, Karyorelictea, Armophorea, Prostomatea, Plagiopylea, Colpodea and Heterotrichea are confirmed.
Ciliate SSU-rDNA reference alignments and trees for phylogenetic placements of metabarcoding data
Although ciliates are one of the most dominant microbial eukaryotic groups in many environments, there is a lack of updated global ciliate alignments and reference trees that can be used for
Revisions to the Classification, Nomenclature, and Diversity of Eukaryotes
TLDR
It is confirmed that eukaryotes form at least two domains, the loss of monophyly in the Excavata, robust support for the Haptista and Cryptista, and suggested primer sets for DNA sequences from environmental samples that are effective for each clade are provided.
EukRef‐Ciliophora: a manually curated, phylogeny‐based database of small subunit rRNA gene sequences of ciliates
TLDR
The approach included the inference of phylogenetic trees for every ciliate lineage and produced the largest SSU rRNA tree of the phylum Ciliophora to date, which is superior to the current SILVA database in classifying HTS reads from a global marine survey.

Taxonomic Redescriptions of Two Ciliates, Protogastrostyla pulchra n. g., n. comb. and Hemigastrostyla enigmatica (Ciliophora: Spirotrichea, Stichotrichia), with Phylogenetic Analyses Based on 18S and 28S rRNA Gene Sequences
TLDR
It is concluded that these two species may represent some lower groups in the subclass Stichotrichia, and that G. pulchra should represent a new genus, Protogastrostyla n.
Phylogeny and Systematic Position of Zosterodasys (Ciliophora, Synhymeniida): A Combined Analysis of Ciliate Relationships Using Morphological and Molecular Data
ABSTRACT. The Synhymeniida is characterized both by a band of somatic dikinetids, the synhymenium, extending across the surface of the cell and by a ventral cell mouth lacking specialized feeding
Morphology and Infraciliature of Trochiliopsis australis N. Sp., Pelagohalteria viridis (Fromentel, 1876) N. G., N. Comb., and Strobilidium lacustris N. Sp. (Protozoa, Ciliophora)1
TLDR
Three ciliate species from Australia and Norway were examined by silver impregnation, biometry, and scanning electron microscopy and two Halteria species belong to the new genus, which is redescribed here.
Small Subunit rRNA Phylogenies Show that the Class Nassophorea is Not Monophyletic (Phylum Ciliophora)
TLDR
It is hypothesize that the Phyllopharyngea could have evolved from synhymeniids, with the further development of their subkinetal microtubules as one of the major events, and the development of monokinetid structures might have occurred during the diversifications of the microthoracids, syn Hymeniid, and Phyllophilea from a common ancestor.

Neotypification and Ontogenesis of Leptopharynx costatus costatus Mermod, 1914
TLDR
These observations require changes in the descriptive morphology, support the classification of Leptopharynx into the Microthoracidae, and sustain the nonmonophyly of the Nassophorea.
