AIMS To characterize the composition of microbial populations in a distribution system simulator (DSS) by direct sequence analysis of 16S rDNA clone libraries. METHODS AND RESULTS Bacterial populations were examined in chlorinated distribution water and chloraminated DSS feed and discharge water.
