Species of Tetillidae are distributed worldwide. However, some genera are unresolved and only a few genera and species of this family have been described from the Antarctic. The incorporation of 25 new COI and 18S sequences of Antarctic Tetillidae to those used recently for assessing the genera phylogeny, has allowed us to improve the resolution of some poorly resolved nodes and to confirm the monophyly of previously identified clades. Classical genera such as Craniella recovered their…

Patterns of genetic and morphologic diversity in antarctic sponges

The present thesis contributed to improve the systematic of an Antarctic sponge group and its phylogenetic relationships with other members of the family (Tetillidae) spread all over the world, and to assess the asexual reproduction rate of an Antarctica sponge species (Stylocordyla chupachups).

Molecular phylogenies confirm the presence of two cryptic Hemimycale species in the Mediterranean and reveal the polyphyly of the genera Crella and Hemimycale (Demospongiae: Poecilosclerida)

A phylogenetic study of Hemimycale columella across the Mediterranean suggested larger genetic differences than those expected between sponge populations, and confirmed that unidentified cryptic species may confound ecological studies.

Unravelling the moons: review of the genera Paratetilla and Cinachyrella in the Indo-Pacific (Demospongiae, Tetractinellida, Tetillidae)

Seven new deep-water Tetractinellida (Porifera: Demospongiae) from the Galápagos Islands – morphological descriptions and DNA barcodes

Phylogenetic reconstructions combining independent markers (mtDNA and rDNA) support the generic affiliation of these new species and confirm the separation of Eastern Pacific species from Caribbean and Central to West Pacific species.

Development of a multilocus-based approach for sponge (phylum Porifera) identification: refinement and limitations

For sponges (phylum Porifera), there is no reliable molecular protocol available for species identification. To address this gap, we developed a multilocus-based Sponge Identification Protocol (SIP)

Systematics of ‘lithistid’ tetractinellid demosponges from the Tropical Western Atlantic—implications for phylodiversity and bathymetric distribution

This first integrative approach of TWA ‘lithistid’ demosponges contributes to a better understanding of their phylogenetic affinities, diversity and bathymetric distribution patterns within the TWA.

Microbial diversity in Mediterranean sponges as revealed by metataxonomic analysis

The data highlight the occurrence of dominant and locally enriched microbes in the Mediterranean, together with the biotechnological potential of these sponges and their associated bacteria as sources of bioactive natural compounds.

First records of Geodia demosponges from the New England seamounts, an opportunity to test the use of DNA mini-barcodes on museum specimens

Advances in mini-barcodes on formalin-fixed or old specimens with degraded DNA are advocated, by advocating the use of mini- barcodes in response to the growing need for accurate identification of deep-sea amphi-Atlantic sponge species.

Evolution of group I introns in Porifera: new evidence for intron mobility and implications for DNA barcoding

This study validates the subclass Spirophorina (Tetractinellida) as an intron hotspot in sponges and confirms that most sponge group I introns probably originated from fungi.

An unprecedented new genus and family of Tetractinellida (Porifera, Demospongiae) from New Zealand's Colville Ridge, with a new type of mitochondrial group I intron

The phylogenetic affinity and taxonomic position of this unique sponge is explored in relation to a broad range of tetractinellid sponges using the Folmer’+ Erpenbeck fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and a nearly complete sequence of the 18S rDNA gene.

This study targets representation of type species and genera that have never been sampled for any molecular data in an effort to accelerate progress in classifying this diverse lineage of Demospongiae.

Tetillidae (Spirophorida, Porifera): a taxonomic reevaluation

The study led to a reevaluation of genera in that family, as well as of characters used to distinguish species, and to examine additional biological and molecular biological properties of the sponges for possible application in taxonomy.
