The reactions of photo-excited chlorophylls and pheophytins with quinones have been investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. In slightly alkaline solutions the quinone signals showed line broadening which is explained by degenerate electron transfer between semiquinone radical ions and their benzoquinone parents.
