We consider the effects of "photon bubble" shock trains on the vertical structure of radiation pressure-dominated accretion disks. These density inhomogeneities are expected to develop spontaneously in radiation-dominated accretion disks where magnetic pressure exceeds gas pressure, even in the presence of magnetorotational instability (MRI). They increase the rate at which radiation escapes from the disk and may allow disks to exceed the Eddington limit by a substantial factor without blowing… Expand

Surface Structure in an Accretion Disk Annulus with Comparable Radiation and Gas Pressure
We have employed a three-dimensional energy-conserving radiation MHD code to simulate the vertical structure and thermodynamics of a shearing box whose parameters were chosen so that the radiationExpand
THE EFFECTS OF MAGNETIC FIELDS AND INHOMOGENEITIES ON ACCRETION DISK SPECTRA AND POLARIZATION
We present the results of one- and three-dimensional radiative transfer calculations of polarized spectra emerging from snapshots of radiation magnetohydrodynamical simulations of the local verticalExpand
TIDAL DISRUPTIONS OF WHITE DWARFS FROM ULTRA-CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH INTERMEDIATE-MASS SPINNING BLACK HOLES
We present numerical relativity results of tidal disruptions of white dwarfs from ultra-close encounters with a spinning, intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). These encounters require a full generalExpand
Local Radiation Magnetohydrodynamic Instabilities in Magnetically Stratified Media
We study local radiation magnetohydrodynamic instabilities in static, optically thick, vertically stratified media with constant flux mean opacity. We include the effects of vertical gradients in aExpand
Evidence for the radiation-pressure dominated accretion disk in bursting pulsar GRO J1744−28 using timing analysis
The X-ray pulsar GRO J1744−28 is a unique source that shows both pulsations and type-II X-ray bursts, allowing studies of the interaction of the accretion disk with the magnetosphere at hugeExpand
Broad-band aperiodic variability in X-ray pulsars: accretion rate fluctuations propagating under the influence of viscous diffusion
We investigate aperiodic X-ray flux variability in accreting highly magnetized neutron stars – X-ray pulsars (XRPs). The X-ray variability is largely determined by mass accretion rate fluctuations atExpand
DISSIPATION AND VERTICAL ENERGY TRANSPORT IN RADIATION-DOMINATED ACCRETION DISKS
Standard models of radiation-supported accretion disks generally assume that diffusive radiation flux is solely responsible for vertical heat transport. This requires that heat must be generated at aExpand
Photon bubble turbulence in cold atom gases
TLDR
By accessing the spatially-resolved atom density, this study is able to identify a photon bubble instability and the resulting regime of photon bubble turbulence, and develops a theoretical model describing the coupled dynamics of both photon and atom gases which accurately describes the statistical properties of the turbulent regime. Kinetic Effects on Turbulence Driven by the Magnetorotational Instability in Black Hole Accretion
Magnetorotational Instability (MRI), the instability causing turbulent transport in accretion disks, is studied in the kinetic regime. Radiatively Inefficient Accretion Flows (RIAFs), like the oneExpand
Quasar Accretion Disks are Strongly Inhomogeneous
Active galactic nuclei have been observed to vary stochastically with 10%-20% rms amplitudes over a range of optical wavelengths where the emission arises in an accretion disk. Since the accretionExpand
