When stars form within small groups (with N* ? 100-500 members), their circumstellar disks are exposed to relatively little extreme-ultraviolet (EUV; h? > 13.6 eV) radiation but a great deal of far-ultraviolet (FUV; 6 eV rg and is negligible for rd < rg. Since rg 100 AU for FUV heating, this would imply little mass loss from the planet-forming regions of a disk. In this paper we focus on systems in which photoevaporation is suppressed because rd < rg and show that significant mass loss still… Expand
Photoevaporation of Circumstellar Disks By Far-Ultraviolet, Extreme-Ultraviolet and X-Ray Radiation from the Central Star
We calculate the rate of photoevaporation of a circumstellar disk by energetic radiation (far-UV (FUV), 6 eV 0.1 keV) from its central star. We focus on the effects of FUV and X-ray photons since EUVExpand
VISCOUS EVOLUTION AND PHOTOEVAPORATION OF CIRCUMSTELLAR DISKS DUE TO EXTERNAL FAR ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION FIELDS
This paper explores the effects of FUV radiation fields from external stars on circumstellar disk evolution. Disks residing in young clusters can be exposed to extreme levels of FUV flux from nearbyExpand
External photoevaporation of circumstellar discs constrains the time-scale for planet formation
Planet-forming circumstellar disks are a fundamental part of the star formation process. Since stars form in a hierarchical fashion in groups of up to hundreds or thousands, the UV radiationExpand
THE PHOTOEVAPORATIVE WIND FROM THE DISK OF TW Hya
TLDR
A detailed study of the circumstellar disk surrounding the nearby star TW Hya is presented and observational constraints to its photoevaporative wind are provided and the implications for a planet-induced gap versus a photoevaporation- induced gap are discussed. Expand
The photoevaporation of discs around young stars in massive clusters
We present models in which the photoevaporation of discs around young stars by an external ultraviolet source (as computed by Adams et al.) is coupled with the internal viscous evolution of theExpand
Photoevaporation of Circumstellar Disks Revisited: The Dust-Free Case
Photoevaporation by stellar ionizing radiation is believed to play an important role in the dispersal of disks around young stars. The mass-loss model for dust-free disks developed by Hollenbach etExpand
Photoevaporation of Protoplanetary Disks
We present HST NICMOS Paschen α (Paα) images and low- and high-resolution IRS spectra of photoevaporating disk-tail systems originally detected at 24 μm near O stars. We find no Paα emission in anyExpand
PHOTOEVAPORATION AS A TRUNCATION MECHANISM FOR CIRCUMPLANETARY DISKS
We investigate the conditions under which the regular satellites of Jupiter and Saturn formed. The final stage of giant planet accretion is thought to occur slowly over a relatively long, 10 Myr,Expand
First evidence of external disc photoevaporation in a low mass star forming region: the case of IM Lup
We model the radiatively driven flow from IM Lup -- a large protoplanetary disc expected to be irradiated by only a weak external radiation field (at least 10$^4$ times lower than the UV fieldExpand
External photoevaporation of protoplanetary discs in sparse stellar groups: the impact of dust growth
We estimate the mass loss rates of photoevaporative winds launched from the outer edge of protoplanetary discs impinged by an ambient radiation field. We focus on mild/moderate environments (theExpand
