  • Phosphoenolpyruvate phosphomutase (PEP mutase) from Tetrahymena pyriformis catalyzes the rearrangement of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to phosphonopyruvate (P-pyr). A spectrophotometric P-pyr assay consisting of the coupled actions of P-pyr decarboxylase, phosphonoacetaldehyde hydrolase, and alcohol dehydrogenase was devised to monitor mutase catalysis.
