The prelingually, profoundly hearing-impaired reader of English is at an immediate disadvantage in that he or she must read an orthography that was designed to represent the phonological structure of English. Can the deaf reader become aware of this structure in the absence of significant auditory input? Evidence from studies with deaf college students will be considered.
