This paper reports results of a quantitative phonetic study of Kabardian, a Northwest Caucasian language that is of typological interest from a phonetic standpoint. A number of cross-linguistically rare properties are examined. These features include the phonetic realization of Kabardian's small vowel inventory, which contains only three contrastive vowel qualities (two short vowels and one long vowel), spectral characteristics of the ten supralaryngeal voiceless fricatives of Kabardian, as…
Acoustic correlates of stress in Turkish Kabardian
This paper reports results of an acoustic study of stress in the Turkish dialect of the Northwest Caucasian language, Kabardian. Stressed syllables were found to have consistently higher fundamental
Phonetics of Southern Ute vowels
This paper presents an acoustic study of the vowel system of Southern Ute, a Southern Numic Uto-Aztecan language spoken in southwestern Colorado. Previous auditory accounts proposed an inventory of
An acoustic study of fricatives in Temirgoy Adyghe
TLDR
An acoustic study of voiceless fricatives in the Temirgoy dialect of the Adyghe language (North West Caucasian, Circassian) shows that while most fricative pairs can be reliably distinguished via centre of gravity alone, the spectral characteristics of some pairs are highly similar.
Segmental Phonetics and Phonology in Caucasian languages
This chapter surveys the major topics of Caucasian segmental phonetics and phonology, focusing on topics with broader implications for general phonetic and phonological theory. The author first
SOME REMARKS ON THE FOUR-WAY PHONATION CONTRAST IN BZHEDUGH ADYGHE
This paper explores the acoustic properties of the four-way phonation contrast in Bzhedugh, an underdescribed dialect of Adyghe (Northwest Caucasian). As opposed to most other Northwest Caucasian
The stop contrasts of the Athabaskan languages
TLDR
An investigation of the phonetic realization of the stops in five Athabaskan languages, compared with data from Navajo, suggests that the languages have exploited the sets of simplex stops and fricatives to build their rich inventories of complex segments, as several linguists have observed.
VOT Features of Consonants in Abaza
Voice onset time (VOT) is a parameter which distinguishes the way consonants are articulated . This parameter is widely used in acoustic phonetics. In particular, there are many studies of it in the
Central vowels in Central Arrernte: A spectrographic study of a small vowel system
TLDR
It is argued that the main function of the vowel in Central Arrernte is to provide formant cues for the adjacent consonants, given that this language is particularly rich in places of articulation.
An acoustic study of trans-vocalic ejective pairs in Cochabamba Quechua
TLDR
It is found that Cochabamba Quechua speakers de-ejectivize one of the two ejectives in such phrases a significant portion of the time, and that, in correct productions with two ejective pairs, the period between the two ejectedives is lengthened by increasing the duration of the vowel and the closure duration ofThe second ejective.

An acoustic study of Kabardian vowels
The results of a spectrographic study of the Kabardian vowel system confirm reports in the literature that phonetic vowel quality in Kabardian is determined by the preceding consonant. The data
Aspects of the phonetics of Tlingit
This article reports on a phonetic investigation of Tlingit, the principal indigenous language of Southeast Alaska, based on fieldwork with several speakers in Juneau. A general survey of the
Retroflex fricatives in Slavic languages

Journal of the International Phonetic Association

The present study explores the phonetic and phonological grounds on which postalveolar fricatives in Polish can be analysed as retroflex, and considers whether postalveolar fricatives in other Slavic
Comparing French and English coronal consonant articulation
Abstract The difference between French and English speakers' production of the coronal consonants /t, d, n, l, s, z/ has traditionally been thought to involve place of articulation (dental vs .
Acoustic characteristics of English fricatives.
TLDR
The present results indicate that spectral peak location, spectral moments, and both normalized and relative amplitude serve to distinguish all four places of fricative articulation.
A cross‐linguistic acoustic study of fricatives
This work presents results of an acoustic study of fricatives in 7 languages (Aleut, Chickasaw, Hupa, Montana Salish, Scottish Gaelic, Toda, and Western Apache), all of which contrast fricatives made
Quantal Aspects of Consonant Production and Perception: A Study of Retroflex Stop Consonants.
Abstract: The acoustic properties and perceptual characteristics of retroflex stop consonants were explored to determine: (1) if there is an area of acoustic stability which defines the articulatory
The phonetics and phonology of retroflexes
This dissertation investigates the phonetic realization and phonological behaviour of the class of retroflexes, i.e. sounds that are articulated with the tongue tip or the underside of the tongue tip
PHONETIC AND PHONOLOGICAL REPRESENTATION OF STOP CONSONANT VOICING
This paper argues for a more structured view of the relation between the phonological feature [voice] and its specific phonetic implementations. Under the theory of universal phonetics proposed here,
