During 1997 and 1998, serious outbreaks of bacterial leaf spot disease were observed on zinnia plants grown in home and commercial gardens in Ohio, USA. Twenty-two strains of Xanthomonas campestris pv. zinniae, isolated from diseased zinnia plants and contaminated seeds, were identified based on morphological, physiological and biochemical tests, fatty acid methyl ester analyses and pathogenicity tests on zinnia cv.
