Magnesium atoms fully embedded in helium nanodroplets are exposed to two-color laser pulses, which trigger multiphoton above-threshold ionization (ATI). This allows exemplary study of the contribution of a dense, neutral, and finite medium on single electron propagation. The angular-resolved photoelectron spectra show striking differences with respect to results obtained on free atoms. Scattering of the individual Mg photoelectrons, when traversing the neutral helium environment, causes the…

Auger emission from the Coulomb explosion of helium nanoplasmas.

The long-time correlated decay dynamics of strong-field exposed helium nanodroplets is studied by means of photoelectron spectroscopy, where the spatial and temporal development of the nanoplasma cloud is encoded in the experimental spectra, whereas the electronic properties of He+ help resolve the different contributions.

Observation of laser-assisted electron scattering in superfluid helium

Condensed-phase LAES creates new possibilities for space-time studies of solids and for real-time tracing of free electrons in liquids, and provides the first insight into the interplay of LAES energy gain/loss and dissipative electron movement in a liquid.

Revealing laser-coherent electron features using phase-of-the-phase spectroscopy

Phase-of-the-phase (PoP) spectroscopy is extended to two-color laser fields having a circularly counter-rotating polarization. In particular, the higher harmonics of the (two-color) phase information

Density functional theory of the structure of magnesium-doped helium nanodroplets

our results with experimental data from laser-induced fluorescence LIF. Line-broadening effects due to the coupling of dynamical deformations of the surrounding helium with the dipole excitation of

Temporal Development of a Laser-Induced Helium Nanoplasma Measured through Auger Emission and Above-Threshold Ionization.

The time-resolved analysis of the energy transfer to quasifree electrons reveals a transient depletion of the Auger emission, which allows for a temporal gate to map the distribution of delocalized electrons in the developing mean field.

Two-Color Strong-Field Photoelectron Spectroscopy and the Phase of the Phase.

The proposed two-color "phase-of-the-phase spectroscopy" quantifies for each final electron momentum a relative-phase contrast (RPC) and a phase of the phase (PP) describing how much and with which phase lag, respectively, the yield changes as a function of the relative phase.

Strong-field ionization of clusters using two-cycle pulses at 1.8 μm

Strong-field ionization of rare-gas clusters is studied using two-cycle 1.8 μm laser pulses to access a new interaction regime in the limit where the electron dynamics are dominated by the laser field and the cluster atoms do not have time to move significantly.

Ultrafast electronic dynamics in helium nanodroplets

Helium nanodroplets have emerged as a test bed for the study of isolated quantum liquids and as an ideal matrix for trapping atoms and molecules in a weakly interacting, cryogenic environment. Their

The role of incoherent scattering in laser-induced and laser-assisted processes

We use the S-matrix formalism in order to investigate the possible role of incoherent scattering in different processes in a strong laser field. In the cases of above-threshold ionization (ATI) of

Laser-assisted electron scattering in strong-field ionization of dense water vapor by ultrashort laser pulses

We report on strong-field ionization of dense water gas in a short infrared laser pulse. By employing a unique combination of photoelectron spectroscopy with a liquid micro-jet technique, we observe
