Histochemical studies carried out on sections of rat and guinea-pig prostate glands revealed the presence of acetylcholinesterase- and noradrenaline-containing nerve fibres in the fibromuscular stroma. Positive staining for acetylcholinesterase but not for noradrenaline was also seen in the epithelium.
