The development of new animal models now allows the pharmacological study of the neuropathic pain. Our results concern mainly antidepressants and opiates; although the results are incomplete, they show that the different components of the pain syndrome depend on various mechanisms and require adapted treatments and that the treatment must begin as soon as possible, before plastic processes sustain a vicious circle of pain. In the future, pharmacological studies will permit better specification…
Pharmacological treatments for chronic non-malignant pain
A large body of research now supports the use of traditional psychiatric treatments in the management of chronic pain. Pharmacological treatments have proven effective for many different pain
Melanocortins and Neuropathic Pain
TLDR
It is suggested that MC4R antagonists, possibly combined with opioids, might contribute to the treatment of human neuropathic pain and an alternative method for quantifying mechanical allodynia (the "CatWalk") is described in this thesis.
Neuropathic Pain and Other Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain Conditions
The objective of this chapter is to review the pathophysiology and treatment approach in various chronic pain conditions, such as neuropathic pain and other chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions.
The therapeutic potential of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonists for pain control
TLDR
Preclinical findings suggest that nAChR agonists have the potential to be highly efficacious treatments in a variety of pain states, however, clinical proof-of-principle studies will be required to determine if nA ChR agonist are active in pathological pain.
Surgical Procedures for Neuropathic Pain
TLDR
Ablative techniques are usually used for cancer pain, with the exception of dorsal root entry zone surgery, which can be indicated for neuropathic pain caused by root avulsions, segmental pain after spinal cord lesions, and, more rarely, pain after peripheral nerve lesions when a paroxysmal and/or an allodynic component is predominant.
Antagonism of the Melanocortin System Reduces Cold and Mechanical Allodynia in Mononeuropathic Rats
TLDR
It is demonstrated that a chronic constriction injury to the rat sciatic nerve, a lesion that produces neuropathic pain, results in changes in the spinal cord MC system, as shown by an increased binding of125I-NDP-MSH to the dorsal horn.
