Fructus Schizandrae, a traditional Chinese tonic, has been shown to lower the elevated serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) levels of patients with chronic viral hepatitis and several of its components decrease the hepatotoxicity of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in animals.
