BACKGROUND Astronauts are exposed to toxic ionizing radiation sources, including galactic cosmic radiation and solar particle events (SPE). Exposure to these radiation sources can lead to cataracts, heritable genetic mutations, cancer, acute life-threatening physiological compromise, and death.
