Several pharmacologic agents with demonstrated effects on the synthesis and release of surfactant are discussed. Clinically the most important of these are glucocorticoids, since they have been administered to pregnant women to accelerate fetal lung maturation and reduce the risk of respiratory distress syndrome associated with premature birth.
