Summary Introduction: Boswellia serrata has been used in traditional medicine for treatment of inflammatory diseases since antiquity. However human kinetic studies are lacking for this. Hence to better elucidate its effects in humans and determine its optimal dosing, this study was planned. Material and Methods: Twelve healthy adult men volunteers were given capsule Wok Vel™ con- taining 333 mg of Boswellia Serrata Extract, orally, after a seven days washout period. Venous blood samples were… Expand
Metabolism of Boswellic Acids in Vitro and in Vivo
TLDR
This study indicates that the efficacy of B. serrata extract may be enhanced by increasing the bioavailability of AKBA, the main active ingredients of boswellic acids, which is not deacetylated to KBA. Expand
Comparative pharmacokinetic study of two boswellic acids in normal and arthritic rat plasma after oral administration of Boswellia serrata extract or Huo Luo Xiao Ling Dan by LC-MS.
TLDR
This comparative pharmacokinetic study provided direct evidence supporting the notion that the efficacy of a complex mixture such as HLXLD is better than that of single components in treating human diseases. Expand
Determination of major boswellic acids in plasma by high-pressure liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry.
TLDR
The here quantified steady state levels suggest βBA to be a possible candidate for the anti-inflammatory and anti-edemateous effects of BSE. Expand
Increased Bioavailability of 11‐Keto‐β‐Boswellic Acid Following Single Oral Dose Frankincense Extract Administration After a Standardized Meal in Healthy Male Volunteers: Modeling and Simulation Considerations for Evaluating Drug Exposures
TLDR
Therapeutic effects of frankincense extracts were shown in laboratory animal disease models as well as in clinical trials studying inflammatory bowel diseases, arthritis, asthma, and cancer, and valid recommendations regarding clinical use are scarce. Expand
Metabolic Profile of 3-Acetyl-11-Keto-β-Boswellic Acid and 11-Keto-β-Boswellic Acid in Human Preparations In Vitro, Species Differences, and Bioactivity Variation
TLDR
All four mono-hydroxylation metabolites exhibited a moderate anti-inflammatory activity and were confirmed to be the major metabolic pathways based on their large CLint and the high amounts of KBA and hydroxylated KBA in human. Expand
Acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA); targeting oral cavity pathogens
TLDR
Acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) can be useful compound for the development of antibacterial agent against oral pathogens and it has great potential for use in mouthwash for preventing and treating oral infections. Expand
Enhanced absorption of boswellic acids by a lecithin delivery form (Phytosome(®)) of Boswellia extract.
TLDR
The increased systemic availability of BAs and the improved tissue distribution, qualify Casperome™ for further clinical development to fully exploit the clinical potential of BE. Expand
Prospects of boswellic acids as potential pharmaceutics.
TLDR
To enhance the pharmacological values of boswellic acids, derivatization has been specifically applied with the aim of discovering more active derivatives of BAs. Expand
Boswellia serrata
TLDR
This review underlines BSE as a promising alternative to NSAIDs, which warrants investigation in further pharmacological studies and clinical trials and presents different perspectives and gives a differentiated insight into the possible mechanisms of action of BSE in humans. Expand
Investigating permeability related hurdles in oral delivery of 11-keto-β-boswellic acid.
TLDR
The major permeability related hurdles that hampered oral bioavailability of KBA included its gastrointestinal instability, CYP3A4 mediated intestinal metabolism, accumulation within the enterocytes and saturable kinetics, which may help in designing novel drug delivery system for KBA. Expand
