In this chapter, we examine several examples where imaginary assailants have terrorized communities, regions or entire countries. Episodes are divided between assailants who were believed to make people sick such as the ‘mad gasser’ of Illinois in 1945, and those who allegedly caused physical injury, as in the case of the phantom slasher of Taipei in 1954.
