Large radial gradients of the bulk ion temperature and density in edge plasmas cause heavy impurity ions to redistribute themselves within flux surfaces, thereby making the impurity density vary poloidally (and, in a stellarator, toroidally). This redistribution reduces the radial impurity flux.
