In asthma, the mechanisms relating airway obstruction, hyperresponsiveness, and inflammation remain rather mysterious. We show here that regulation of airway smooth muscle length corresponds to a dynamically equilibrated steady state, not the static mechanical equilibrium that had been previously assumed.
