Viscoelastic fluids are a common subclass of rheologically complex materials that are encountered in diverse fields from biology to polymer processing. Often the flows of viscoelastic fluids are unstable in situations where ordinary Newtonian fluids are stable, owing to the nonlinear coupling of the elastic and viscous stresses. Perhaps more surprisingly, the instabilities produce flows with the hallmarks of turbulence -- even though the effective Reynolds numbers may be $O(1)$ or smaller. We… Expand
Purely elastic linear instabilities in parallel shear flows with free-slip boundary conditions
Abstract We perform a linear stability analysis of viscoelastic plane Couette and plane Poiseuille flows with free-slip boundary conditions. The fluid is described by the Oldroyd-B constitutiveExpand

Purely elastic flow instabilities-those occurring in the absence of inertial forces-in flows used for the measurement of fluid viscometric parameters are reviewed. In particular, we examine theExpand
An introductory essay on subcritical instabilities and the transition to turbulence in visco-elastic parallel shear flows
This paper is an pedagogical essay on the scenario of the instabilities and the transition to turbulence in visco-elastic polymer flows. When polymers are long, they get easily stretched by the shearExpand
Non-isothermal modification of purely elastic flow instabilities in torsional flows of polymeric fluids
Previous experimental measurements and linear stability analyses of curvilinear shearing flows of viscoelastic fluids have shown that the combination of streamwise curvature and elastic normalExpand
Nanoparticle dispersion in porous media in viscoelastic polymer solutions
Abstract Flow of viscoelastic fluids in porous media is ubiquitous in biological and industrial processes, and the choice of viscoelastic fluids is of foremost importance for their effect onExpand
Elastic turbulence in a polymer solution flow
The low Reynolds number or ‘elastic’ turbulence that is observed is accompanied by significant stretching of the polymer molecules, resulting in an increase in the elastic stresses of up to two orders of magnitude. Expand
Elasto-inertial turbulence
It is demonstrated here for a model system of such complex fluids that at high shear rates, turbulence is not simply modified as previously believed but is suppressed and replaced by a different type of disordered motion, elasto-inertial turbulence. Expand

Interior stagnation-point flows of viscoelastic liquids arise in a wide variety of applications including extensional viscometry, polymer processing and microfluidics. Experimentally, these flowsExpand
Continuous Pathway between the Elasto-Inertial and Elastic Turbulent States in Viscoelastic Channel Flow.
For highly elastic ultradilute polymer solutions, a single linearly unstable modal branch may underlie transition to elastic turbulence at zero Re and to elasto-inertial turbulence at moderate Re, implying the existence of continuous pathways connecting the turbulent states to each other and to the laminar base state. Flow of concentrated viscoelastic polymer solutions in porous media: effect of M(W) and concentration on elastic turbulence onset in various geometries.
This work reports elastic turbulence and apparent thickening in the flow of polymer solutions both in rock samples and in microfluidic analogues and correlates the onset of thickening and turbulence with rheological measurements. Expand
