The Learning Research Group at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center is concerned with all aspects of the communication and manipulation of knowledge. We design, build, and use dynamic media which can be used by human beings of all ages. Several years ago, we crystallized our dreams into a design idea for a personal dynamic medium the size of a notebook (the Dynabook) which could be owned by everyone and could have the power to handle virtually all of its owner's information-related needs. The early history of Smalltalk
TLDR
Early Smalltalk was the first complete realization of these new points of view as parented by its many predecessors in hardware, language, and user interface design. Expand
Structures and interactivity of media--a prototype for the electronic book
TLDR
The Movie Manual system is discussed from its inception, through design and implementation, to its state today, and the Movie Manual's future is considered, including generalization to other applications, and evolution due to advances in technology. Expand

Beyond Multimedia Literacy: Supporting Mastery in Virtual Environments
TLDR
This article focuses on the potential of metamedia in education to provide users with a dynamic, immersive experience but enable them to construct, produce, embed, and archive multimedia resources, text, video, social media, and 3D artifacts, as well as Web browsers and entire software applications. Rosetta Smalltalk: a conversational, extensible microcomputer language
TLDR
Rosetta Smalltalk is a personal information handling environment for low-cost microcomputers based on the work of the Learning Research Group at Xerox PARC to provide an open-ended medium in which personalized tools may easily be constructed. Expand
Cold War Games: Operational Gaming and Interactive Programming in Historical and Contemporary Contexts
TLDR
The present study traces the historical roots of DIY computing by focusing on the concept of interactivity, and especially interactive forms of digital gaming, which was picked up and popularized via the earliest personal computers. Expand
Coding at the speed of touch
TLDR
YinYang's programming model is based on tile and behavior constructs that simplify program structure for effective display and input on tablets, and also supports the definition and safe reuse of new abstractions to be competitive with capable programming languages. Expand
