Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn infant can be difficult to distinguish from other cardiopulmonary causes of cyanosis during the newborn period. Infants with PPHN have cyanosis, tachypnea, acidemia, normal pulmonary parenchymal markings on the chest radiography, and anatomically normal hearts.
