Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors control many cellular and metabolic processes. They are transcription factors belonging to the family of ligand-inducible nuclear receptors. Three isotypes called PPARalpha, PPARbeta/delta and PPARgamma have been identified in lower vertebrates and mammals.
