Abstract Three strains of hamsters are produced by the NIH Animal Production Center, the golden, the cream, and the albino. An active type of periodontal disease develops in golden and cream animals when they are fed a high carbohydrate diet, but it does not develop in the albino hamster tested under similar conditions.
