Periodontal diseases in the child

Background: Periodontal diseases are among the most frequent diseases affecting children and adolescents. These include gingivitis, localized or generalized aggressive periodontitis (a.k.a., early onset periodontitis which includes generalized or localized prepubertal periodontitis and juvenile periodontitis) and periodontal diseases associated with systemic disorders. The best approach to managing periodontal diseases is prevention, followed by early detection and treatment. Methods: This…

Identification of Gingivitis-Related Genes Across Human Tissues Based on the Summary Mendelian Randomization
- Medicine, BiologyFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology
- 2020
This study constructed a data integration method that uses the Summary Mendelian randomization (SMR) to combine the Genome-wide association study (GWAS) with expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) data to identify gingivitis-related genes.

The classification of gingival disease in this review relied upon experimental and/or epidemiological human studies that accurately and reliably assessed an underlying functional derangement that was localized to the gingiva and was reported in a peer-reviewed journal.

Evidence suggests that lesion distribution may be a function of the nature of the infecting agent and the characteristics of the immune response, and that both localized and generalized forms of disease may be observed in the same family.

Reductions in attachment level and changes in microbiological parameters were similar to those found in studies of localized juvenile periodontitis subjects, where surgery or antibiotics have been shown to be necessary to reduce levels of A. actinomycetemcomitans.

It is shown that a substantial suppression of subgingival A. actinomycetemcomitans cannot be achieved by periodontal scaling and root planing alone, but can be accomplished by surgical removal ofperiodontal tissues.
