In Cote d’Ivoire, unofficial political actors have been such fixtures of state power that the distinction between state and civil society has become moot. Indeed, the conceit of a separation between these domains has offered repeated opportunities for political reinvention. The history of dozo hunters in Cote d’Ivoire shows how some Ivoirians have mastered this “oscillation” (in Jean-Loup Amselle’s terms) between insider and outsider roles.
